As summer draws to a close, you may be looking for ways to freshen up your apartment after all, you’ve got that extra day coming up on Labor day and the air is crisp.
Introducing something new in honor of the season of life can be totally affordable and easy, just go the do-it-yourself route! Here are some quick DIY weekend projects you can tackle in a matter of days:
Vases
Because it’s spring, you may want to bring some flowers inside to give your apartment new life. But where will you put them? Certainly not in some dull vase or drinking glass. You can whip up a cute vessel for your blooms this weekend if you want.
Here’s what you’ll need:- Jars: Canning jars, wine bottles or beer bottles work great
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Paint
Clean your jars or bottles, removing all labels. Once they’re dry, use the hot glue gun to write fun words, like “autumn” or “love,” across the front. Or, draw images using the glue. Once the glue is totally cool, paint over the jar. The glue will help the word or image stick out.
Pick any color you or finish you want– matte paint is totally in right now. If you like rustic decor, use sandpaper to wear down the glue letters. However, this step is optional.
Bathroom Storage
Fall is often associated with changing and organizing, and you can tidy up your apartment with this do it yourself project. If you have extra bath linens, you can display them in a way that looks artistic and ensures they’re ready to go when you need them.
Here’s what you’ll need:- Baskets
- A drill
- Screws
Find the studs in your bathroom wall and mark them with a pencil. Then, pre-drill two holes that are parallel to the floor. (Make sure you get your landlord’s written permission before you do this.) Next, make holes on the bottom of your basket to line up with the ones in your walls.
Place the basket on the walls so the holes line up. Drill screws into the holes to secure the basket. You may need to glue a piece of wood to the bottom of the basket to better hold the screws in place.
Once your baskets are hung, they’ll act as rustic shelves or cubbies to hold rolled-up towels. You can even store extra toilet paper in the baskets!
Decorate a Pillow Case
Whether you have throw pillows with removable cases or you want to spruce up your bed, you can add a quote to the fabric. Write something as simple as “Love” or as elaborate as your favorite saying.
Simply remove the pillow case (or buy a new one) and get these items:
- Letter stencils
- A pencil
- A fabric marker
Use your pencil to trace the letters onto your pillow case. Double-check your work to ensure it’s evenly spaced, and redo letters as needed. Once you’re totally satisfied, use the fabric marker to fill in letters.
Dress Up Your Bookshelf
Your bookshelves may look nice now, but you can improve their aesthetics without buying anything– now that’s my kind of weekend project! All you have to do is rearrange your books based on color.
Look at the covers or spines of your books, placing them in piles– pink in one and green in another, you get the idea. Then, put them back on your shelf by color. You can make a rainbow spectrum, or pick one or two colors to include on your shelf (color blocking is always hot).
If you have leftover books that don’t quite fit the look, get fabric boxes to put on the bottom of your shelf and store the books inside– the boxes can match the look you’re going for and keep your books together.
A few days are all you need to complete these DIY weekend projects. In no time, your apartment will be fresh and ready for spring.
